The Joy of Making Things Slowly

We live in a world that encourages us to do everything a little faster. We expect quick results, instant answers, and overnight deliveries. Pottery quietly asks us to do the opposite. There are no shortcuts with clay. A piece must be formed, allowed to dry, bisque fired, glazed, and fired again before it's ready to use. Every stage has its own timing, and no amount of rushing will make the process better. In fact, rushing usually creates more problems than it solves.
 
Perhaps that's one of the reasons I enjoy working with clay so much. It reminds me to slow down and appreciate the process instead of focusing only on the finished piece. Some days the most rewarding part isn't what comes out of the kiln, but the quiet time spent making it. I've noticed the same thing happens with many of my students. They arrive carrying the busyness of everyday life, but after a little while the conversation settles, the wheel begins turning, and the studio becomes calm while they work on their centering ad pulling up walls. For a couple of hours, the outside world seems to fade away. That slower pace is something many of us don't realize we're missing until we experience it.
A Thought from My Worktable 
Every finished pot represents hours, (or sometimes days) of patient work. I think that's part of what makes handmade pottery feel so special. It carries not only the marks of our hands, but also the time we were willing to give it. In a fast-moving world, that feels more valuable than ever.
