Clay rhythm

Finding Your Rhythm with Clay

September always feels like a fresh beginning. The busy days of summer begin to settle, routines return, and for many people it's the perfect time to learn something new or revisit a hobby they've missed.

One of the things I've noticed over the years is that every potter develops their own rhythm. Some people enjoy the quiet focus of throwing on the wheel, while others feel most at home hand-building. Some work quickly, and others take their time, carefully refining every detail. None of these approaches is better than another. The important part is finding the pace that feels natural to you.
It's easy to compare our work to someone else's, especially when we're learning. I often remind my students that every experienced potter once sat where they are now, wondering if their bowl was too uneven or if their mug looked quite right.

Progress in pottery isn't measured by making one perfect piece; it's measured by understanding the clay a little better each time you work with it. The more time you spend making, the more familiar the process becomes. Your hands begin to remember movements that once felt awkward, and little by little your confidence grows. Looking back at work you made a few months ago is often the best reminder of how far you've come.

A Thought from My Worktable

One of the reasons I love teaching pottery is watching students discover their own way of working. There isn't a single path to becoming a potter, and there isn't a perfect style to aim for. The joy comes from showing up, making the next piece, and allowing your skills to grow one project at a time.
