What Your First Pottery Class Really Gives You
 
Walking into a pottery studio for the first time can feel a little intimidating. Many people arrive wondering if they'll be any good or whether everyone else will have more experience. The truth is, almost everyone feels that way at first, and it usually takes only a few minutes before those worries begin to disappear.
 
Over the years, I've learned that a first pottery class isn't really about making a perfect bowl or mug. It's about discovering how clay responds to your hands and learning to enjoy the process rather than focusing on the outcome. Clay has a way of slowing us down. If we rush, it lets us know. If we're patient, it rewards us in unexpected ways.
One of my favourite moments comes near the end of class when everyone final work are on the table. Students begin admiring each other's pieces, and almost every time someone says, "I love that one," the person who made it replies, "Really? I thought it didn't turn out very well." It reminds me that we are often much harder on ourselves than anyone else is.
 
Handmade pottery isn't meant to be identical or perfect. Those small variations; a gentle curve, a slightly uneven rim, or the marks left by your hands are what make each piece unique to you! They tell the story of the person who made it.
I've also noticed that many students return, not because they want to make a better bowl (well sometimes that's the reason), but mostly because they remember how they felt while they were here. For a couple of hours, life slows down, conversations become easier, and there's something deeply satisfying about shaping and taming a simple piece of clay with your own hands.
 
A Thought from My Worktable
Every experienced potter was once a beginner. Your first piece won't be your best, and it doesn't need to be. If it makes you smile and inspires you to come back and make another, then it has already done exactly what it was meant to do.
