MEET SHIVA
I am a pottery and textile artist with a Bachelor of Design from OCAD University in Toronto. My earlier life was rooted in technology and academics: I hold a degree in computer programming, a degree in humanities, and two college diplomas in business analysis and consultation. I went on to spend almost two decades working as a computer programmer and IT lead. Living through the constant pressure of corporate life taught me how much we all need moments of calm, like the quiet focus that comes when our hands touch clay and we lose ourselves in the creative process. Eventually, I quit my corporate IT job, possibly the bravest decision of my life, and I’ve never looked back!

Since then, my artistic path has been enriched by mentorships, residencies, and national and international exhibitions, with my work now part of both private and public collections. Much of my practice explores social change and cultural dialogue, drawing from my Iranian and Canadian heritage.

Teaching has become a vital part of my work. My background in programming, business, and humanities gives me a unique perspective on how people learn, solve problems, and express themselves. At my Stouffville studio, I don’t just teach pottery and textiles as craft; I encourage students to discover creative flow, to think critically, and to experience the sense of calm and empowerment that making can bring. Creating a supportive space where people can take risks, learn, and connect through clay is one of the most rewarding parts of my journey.

FUN FACTS ABOUT ME
  • I have a kiln god named Patrick. I say a little prayer to him before every firing and ask him to keep an eye on things during the 15-hour heat. So far, he’s been very reliable.
  • I can weave for hours without realizing it’s suddenly dark outside.
  • I secretly love when student pieces turn out better than mine.
  • My playlists range from indie jazz to Peruvian flute to an ebook (when I’m glazing, I need to hear a story).
  • I can center clay while carrying on a full conversation (but not if I’m hungry).Clay is like a boss, demanding your full attention and presence. Yarn, on the other hand, is more like a friend, flexible, forgiving, and happy to go with your pace. I love working with both, depending on the mood.

MY PHILOSOPHY
I believe creativity lives in everyone. My workshops are about learning to slow down, trust your hands, and enjoy the process, not just the end result. Whether we’re making a dinnerware item or a sculpture or making a cloth, it’s all about connection, discovery, and finding joy in small things.
By embracing a slower, more mindful creative process, you can find your rhythm and ground yourself in the moment.
